What is ABRSM?

Established in 1889, the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (known more familiarly as ABRSM), is an examination board and music education charity based in the United Kingdom. They are accredited to award diploma qualifications in music and graded exams. The exams are standardized, designed to progress musical proficiency, and recognized internationally.

ABRSM piano exams consist of eight total levels, with the higher levels requiring a certificate for proof of theory exam completion.

Is it the same as CM?

Certificate of Merit, also known as “CM,” is another music exam system. While ABRSM is more internationally recognized, CM is primarily used in the United States — particularly California. Zhang Piano Studio only provides preparation for ABRSM exams, and no other system.

How can my child apply?

There are technically no prerequisites in place for who can register to take an exam. However, for new students interested in applying, Zhang Piano Studio requires an audition to determine their qualification. For preexisting studio students, because every person’s abilities and situations are different, details may be discussed with the instructor.

Students preparing for exams are required to purchase all the necessary materials.

Can I take piano lessons without applying for exams?

Absolutely! In fact, most students here are not exam-taking students. ABRSM exam preparation is merely another service that the studio offers for those who are interested.

Everyone’s musical journey is unique. Students who take piano lessons simply for the joy of learning and developing a love for music are just as valued as those pursuing a more structured and traditional path, such as exam preparation. Ultimately, music is a gift that enriches our lives, and the way each person chooses to experience it is entirely their own.
